A YouTube Shorts series is a show made only of Shorts, split into seasons and numbered episodes. To run a micro drama as one, make a playlist of the episodes, turn it into a show in YouTube Studio, set it to serial so episodes play oldest to newest, and give every episode a season number. Each episode must be vertical or square and no longer than 180 seconds. Viewers who find an episode in the Shorts feed get a "watch series" button that opens a feed where they swipe forward to the next episode. YouTube launched Shorts series on September 23, 2026. Everything below was checked on YouTube's own pages on November 4, 2026.
Oakgen makes an AI micro drama studio, so we have a stake in this topic. The YouTube rules here come from YouTube, not from us. If you have not made the episodes yet, our AI micro drama generator writes the series, locks the cast and films each vertical episode.
Make season 1 before you set up the show
Write the series, lock the cast and voices, and film each 9:16 episode shot by shot.

Who this guide is for
- A creator who already posts a micro drama as loose Shorts and wants viewers to reach episode 2 without hunting for it.
- A faceless AI channel that wants a format YouTube's monetization reviewers read as a story, not a template.
- An agency or studio pitching a branded vertical series and needing to know how a show on YouTube is built.
If you are still at the idea stage, start with how to make an AI micro drama and come back once you have three episodes. For TikTok and Instagram, our guide to posting a micro drama series covers playlists and linked reels. This post covers only YouTube's new show tools.
How we checked this
On November 4, 2026 we read YouTube Help's "Create shows from your videos" page, YouTube's Made on YouTube posts from September 23, 2026, its October 27, 2026 post on microdramas, the channel memberships perks page, the Shorts monetization policies and the channel monetization policies. We used TechCrunch and MediaPost as secondary sources and say so where we rely on them. Oakgen facts come from the Micro Drama code and product page as of November 2026. We did not run a Shorts series ourselves, so this post makes no claim about reach, retention or earnings. The season plan below is illustrative.
How to set up a YouTube Shorts series in Studio
There are two routes. Both end in the same place, a show with seasons and episodes.
Route 1. Turn an existing playlist into a show
Use this if your episodes are already live in a playlist.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Content.
- Click Playlists.
- Hover over the playlist, click Options, then click Add show features.
YouTube adds every video in the playlist to Season 1. If you set the playlist order by hand, episode numbers follow your order. If not, they follow publish date, oldest to newest. The Help page also says non-serial is "automatically selected when converting a playlist to a show". Non-serial lists episodes newest to oldest, which puts your latest cliffhanger at the top and episode 1 at the bottom. Check the show's details and switch it to serial.
Route 2. Create a new show
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the top right corner, click Create, then New show.
- Set the show's details. Choose serial.
- Click Done.
Then add episodes. Open Content, click Shows, then click Add content to pick existing videos or playlists. YouTube numbers episodes by publish date, so publish in story order. To fix a number later, open Content, then Shows, hover over the show, click Episodes, then hover over the season or episode number and use the arrow to edit it. Changing one number renumbers the episodes around it.
Artwork and thumbnails
A show takes two pieces of 16:9 artwork, in JPG or PNG, up to 10 MB each. The banner is the poster and carries the show's title or logo. The backdrop is the same art without the title. YouTube recommends at least 1080p and encourages 4K, at 3840 x 2160 pixels. Each Short inside a series can also have its own custom thumbnail.
To feature the show on your channel page, go to Customization, then the Home tab, click Add section, choose Single playlist and pick the show. Our guide to AI YouTube thumbnails covers making and testing thumbnail options.
How to plan a Shorts series micro drama season
A show changes how viewers move through your episodes. It does not write a better episode 1. Plan the season before you open Studio, because the season number is required and episode numbers follow publish order.
Pick an episode length you can hold
YouTube allows up to 180 seconds per episode. That is a ceiling, not a target. YouTube's October 27 post describes Asia-Pacific creators writing dramas "told in fast-paced 60-second scenes". We would start at 60 seconds. It is long enough for one scene and one turn, short enough to keep the hook and the cliffhanger close together, and it fits YouTube's members-only Shorts instructions if you go that way later.
Put the cliffhanger in the last three seconds
The series feed takes viewers straight to the next episode, so the last frame of each episode is the pitch for the next one. Cut on the reveal, not after the reaction. Open the next episode with a few seconds that restate the cliffhanger for viewers who land there first from the Shorts feed. Our micro drama script guide has a beat sheet for this, and the tropes and episode-1 hooks list has 30 openings to start from.
Keep the cast the same in every episode
A lead who looks different in episode 4 reads as a new person, and viewers in a binge feed notice faster than viewers who find one Short a week. Lock faces, outfits and voices before you film anything. Keeping characters consistent across AI drama episodes covers the method.
Set a cadence you can keep for a full season
YouTube does not publish a recommended cadence for Shorts series. Its October 27 post singles out India's Shorts Break for "High-Frequency Publishing", with episodes that "keep audiences returning daily". Daily is hard to sustain with AI production. Our own view is to finish at least three episodes before you publish episode 1, then publish on fixed days you can hold for the whole season. A gap in the middle of a season hurts more than a slower schedule.
A season plan you can copy
This is our original asset for this post. It is an illustrative plan for a six-episode first season at 60 seconds per episode, not a result we observed. Change the beats to fit your story, but keep the columns. They are the decisions you need before you set up the show.
| Episode | Length | Job of the episode | Cliffhanger type | Thumbnail frame | Publish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S1 E1 | 60 s | Open on the conflict, name the lead and the secret | A reveal the lead did not expect | The reveal, mid-reaction | Day 1 |
| S1 E2 | 60 s | Recap in 3 seconds, raise the stakes | A threat with a deadline | The threat's face | Day 3 |
| S1 E3 | 60 s | First win for the lead | The win costs something | The object that was lost | Day 5 |
| S1 E4 | 60 s | Midpoint twist, an ally changes sides | Betrayal | The ally, half in shadow | Day 8 |
| S1 E5 | 60 s | Lowest point | The lead is caught | The lead, cornered | Day 10 |
| S1 E6 | 60 s | Season finale, answer the E1 question | A new question for season 2 | The new question, shown not told | Day 12 |
Before you publish episode 1, check five things:
- Episodes 1 to 3 are finished and exported vertical, under 180 seconds.
- Every episode moves the plot. If two episodes could swap places, rewrite one.
- Each episode has its own thumbnail frame picked.
- The AI disclosure is set at upload if the drama looks realistic. Do you have to label AI videos has YouTube's exact rule.
- The show is set to serial and the season number is 1.
How to make the episodes in Oakgen
The season plan above maps onto Oakgen Micro Drama with little translation. As of November 2026 a series in Micro Drama has up to 8 episodes and up to 4 named characters, in vertical 9:16, with episode presets of 30, 45, 60 or 90 seconds. A whole series runs at most 300 seconds, so six 45-second episodes or five 60-second episodes fit. Treat one Oakgen series as one YouTube season.
The flow is the one in our step-by-step AI micro drama guide. You write or paste the story, approve the script and its price, lock the cast and voices, review a storyboard, then film each shot. You can redo a single shot instead of a whole episode, then download the episode file and upload it to YouTube yourself. Oakgen does not post to YouTube for you. Open the Micro Drama studio to start a season, and see what an AI micro drama costs per episode before you commit to six.
Film a six-episode season
Pick 45 or 60 second episodes, lock up to four characters and see each step's price before it runs.
Here is where it breaks. The 300-second cap means a longer show needs a new series for each season, and we did not confirm that a locked cast carries into a new series. For season 2, check every face against season 1 before you publish. If you need more control per shot, build episodes by hand instead. Kling 4.0 on Oakgen makes silent 9:16 clips of 3 to 30 seconds, per its Kling 4.0 model page. Our Kling 4.0 how-to plans a 30-second episode beat by beat, and Kling 4.0 vs Seedance 2.5 compares the two video models. You then add voices and cut the episode in Compose.
Does a Shorts series help with the 10 million Shorts views rule?
Not directly. From February 1, 2027, a channel in the YouTube Partner Program earns Shorts Feed ad and YouTube Premium revenue for a month only with at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. YouTube Help measures that "over the 90 day period ending on the 15th day of the calendar month preceding the month for which earnings are being calculated." Nothing on the Shorts monetization page treats series episodes differently from other Shorts. Our YouTube monetization requirements 2027 guide works through the math for a Shorts-only channel.
What a series can change is how many people watch past episode 1. Each extra episode a viewer watches is another view. YouTube's October 27 post adds that for microdramas "40% of views and 30% of clicks occurred more than 30 days after the video goes live". That is YouTube's figure across microdramas, not a promise for your show. If it holds for you, a finished season keeps adding views inside later 90-day windows.
The policy side matters as much as the numbers. YouTube's channel monetization policies list "a series following a set of characters across episodes" as allowed when "each video has a distinct storyline, focus, or concept". They also allow "using AI to visualize a unique character and narrative you invented". They exclude videos "where characters are put in the same situation over and over again with the same outcome". A real serialized plot is the safe side of that line. What YouTube demonetizes on faceless AI channels goes through the rest of the policy.
Can you sell members-only Shorts episodes?
Partly confirmed. Here is what YouTube's own pages say as of November 4, 2026.
- Announced on YouTube's blog. On October 27, 2026, YouTube wrote that "In the coming weeks, we'll revamp the viewer experience for members-only episodes on mobile. Viewers will be able to easily join a channel membership to keep watching the next episodes". MediaPost reported the same on October 28.
- Documented for single Shorts. YouTube Help lists Shorts among channel membership perks. To make a new Short members-only, it says to select a file "Up to 60 seconds" in square or vertical, then set visibility to Members-only. An existing Short can be switched in Studio under Content, then Edit, then Visibility.
- Not documented for series. The Help page on shows does not mention members-only episodes, and we found no Help page with steps for gating part of a Shorts series. Treat members-only episodes inside a series as announced, not live, until the option appears in your Studio.
Three limits apply now. Members-only Shorts "must be fully original content, and may not include music owned by third parties, including music from the Shorts music library." They do not trigger a notification to members. And channel memberships need their own eligibility, which our 2027 monetization guide lists under fan funding. One more thing to weigh is that the 10 million rule counts qualified Shorts views, and YouTube does not say whether members-only views count. Our guess is that they do not, so gating episodes may trade pool revenue for membership revenue.
If you plan to gate later episodes, write them so the free episodes still end on a complete turn. A viewer who hits a paywall with no payoff in what they watched is more likely to swipe away than to join.
Give every episode its own score
Make original music for each episode so members-only uploads carry no third-party tracks.
Common mistakes with a Shorts series
- Leaving the show as non-serial. Converted playlists default to non-serial, so new viewers see your latest episode first.
- Putting a long-form recap in the series playlist. A Shorts series playlist must contain only Shorts.
- Publishing out of order. Episode numbers follow publish date unless you set the order by hand. Fixing it later renumbers everything after.
- Treating 180 seconds as the target. Longer episodes push the hook and the cliffhanger apart.
- Planning revenue on members-only episodes now. As of November 4, 2026 the series version is an announcement, not a documented feature.
- Using library music in an episode you may gate later. Members-only Shorts cannot use Shorts library music. Music cleared for one use may not be cleared for the other.
- Template episodes. The same scene with new faces each time is what YouTube's inauthentic content policy describes.
When another approach fits better
- Your channel does not have show features yet. Use a playlist plus the related video link on each Short, as our micro drama posting guide describes. Convert the playlist to a show once the option appears.
- Your story needs more than 3 minutes per scene. Post it as long-form. Long-form watch hours count toward the 8,000-hour route into YPP, which Shorts views do not.
- You want paid episodes now. Dedicated drama apps such as ReelShort and DramaBox already sell episodes. How micro drama makes money compares those routes with platform payouts.
- Your audience is on TikTok. Its playlist tool needs more than 10,000 followers, so the right setup depends on your account size.
For the full workflow from one-line idea to a season you can upload, start on the Oakgen micro drama product page. It lists the current limits and the three ways to begin.
Start your first Shorts series
Write and finish three episodes, set the show to serial, give each episode its own thumbnail and publish on days you can keep. Check your Studio for the members-only option before you plan around it. Then watch the drop between episode 1 and episode 2 in Analytics. That number tells you whether the cliffhanger is working.
Turn one idea into a season
Go from a one-line premise to six vertical episodes with the same cast in each, ready to upload as a Shorts series.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a YouTube Shorts series?
In YouTube Studio, either open Content, then Playlists, hover over a playlist and click Options, then Add show features, or click Create and then New show in the top right corner. For a Shorts series the playlist must contain only Shorts, each vertical or square and no longer than 180 seconds. Set a season number for every episode and choose serial order for a story. That is YouTube Help as of November 4, 2026.
Who can use YouTube Shorts series?
TechCrunch reported on September 23, 2026 that the feature was rolling out to creators in the YouTube Partner Program across web, mobile and TV. YouTube's own Help page for shows does not state an eligibility rule, so if you do not see Create, then New show, in Studio, your channel may not have it yet.
Should a micro drama be a serial or non-serial show?
Serial. YouTube lists serial episodes oldest to newest and says they are meant to be watched in order. Non-serial lists episodes newest to oldest and is selected automatically when you convert a playlist, so change it if you start from a playlist.
Can I make members-only episodes in a Shorts series?
YouTube's blog said on October 27, 2026 that in the coming weeks it would revamp the mobile viewer experience for members-only episodes, so viewers can join a channel membership and keep watching. YouTube Help documents members-only Shorts as a membership perk but, as of November 4, 2026, has no steps for members-only episodes inside a series. Treat the series part as announced, not documented.
Does a Shorts series help me reach the 10 million Shorts views rule?
Not directly. From February 1, 2027, a partner needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to earn from the Shorts Creator Pool that month. A series counts the same Shorts views as any other Shorts. What it can change is how many viewers go on to episode 2 and beyond.
How long can a Shorts series episode be?
Up to 180 seconds, vertical or square, per YouTube's Help page on shows. If you plan to make some episodes members-only, note that the members-only Shorts instructions on YouTube Help still say to select a file of up to 60 seconds.
Will YouTube demonetize an AI micro drama series?
Not for being a series. YouTube's monetization policy allows a series following a set of characters across episodes when each video has a distinct storyline, and lists using AI to visualize a character and narrative you invented as allowed. The risk is template episodes where the same thing happens every time.
