"AI school photo" is a search that can mean three different things. In 2023 it mostly meant a filter that turned your selfies into a stack of retro yearbook personas. In 2026 it has also come to mean parents asking a chatbot for their kids' school portraits. School Photo is a third, narrower thing. Here is the history, and how to tell them apart.

Where the AI yearbook trend came from
September 2023: Epik and the '90s yearbook
The Know Your Meme entry for the AI '90s Yearbook Trend dates it to late September 2023. K-pop idols began posting AI yearbook portraits from about September 27, and the TikTok account @doseofrx posted on September 30. Know Your Meme credits the filter to the Epik app. Its origin section says it is unclear who started the trend, while its spread section says @doseofrx started it on the app, so sources disagree. The example TikToks use the creators' own original sounds; we found no single song attached to it.
How the yearbook filter worked
CNBC, syndicated by NBC San Diego on October 5, 2023, reported that Epik's paid feature generated 60 yearbook pictures from 8 to 12 uploaded photos. The fun came from the variety: retro hair, different outfits and stock high-school characters in one batch. Commercial filters such as PhotoGrid's AI Yearbook still lean on 80s and 90s styling with outfits and props.
October 2026: parents and AI school photos
A different story arrived this school year. Dexerto reported on October 6, 2026 that parents were photographing their children at home and using ChatGPT to produce school-style portraits with the familiar gradient backdrop, to avoid paying for picture packages. The same report quoted a parent who said the tool changed how their children looked even when asked to keep their features.
That is a practical money-saving use, not a nostalgia joke, and it raises questions about children's photos that a novelty template should not try to answer. School Photo is built for a portrait of your own current face, and we do not suggest it as a replacement for a school's official photographs.
How School Photo differs from both
| AI '90s yearbook (2023) | Parents' AI school photos (2026) | School Photo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input | 8 to 12 selfies | A home photo of a child, plus a prompt | One current photo of your face |
| Output | Dozens of retro personas | A school-style portrait, varies by prompt | One head-and-shoulders portrait |
| Styling | Decade hair, outfits, props | Whatever the prompt asks | Mottled blue backdrop, soft studio light |
| Face | Restyled | Reported to drift in some cases | Designed to stay as photographed |
| Choices | Several modes | Free text | None beyond the photo |
The fixed parts are the point. Every result is a 4:5 head-and-shoulders shot with the body turned slightly and the face straight to camera, in front of a mottled blue canvas, with your own clothing from the shoulders up. There is no decade picker and no age change. The picture day vs AI yearbook page has the short version.
Which one do you actually want?
- You want to see yourself as a 90s jock, goth and prom king in one go. That is the yearbook-persona format, and School Photo will not do it.
- You want one convincing picture-day print of you now, for a then-and-now post, a team page or a reunion invite. That is School Photo. The ideas article has concepts and outfit tips, and the yearbook page guide shows how a group turns individual portraits into a grid.
- You want a younger version of yourself. None of the formats above is the right tool; School Photo keeps your current face.
Getting the likeness right
Since the template keeps your features as photographed, the selfie you choose decides most of the result. A large, sharp, front-facing face, eyes on the lens and no hat or sunglasses works best; the selfie guide explains why, and the how-to covers the single upload. Before sharing, compare the portrait with your original using the likeness and backdrop check, and label it as AI-made. For other portrait templates, see the AI photo trend playbook.
Frequently asked questions
Where did the AI yearbook trend start?
It spread in late September 2023 through a paid yearbook feature in the Epik app. Who started it is unclear, and Know Your Meme's own entry is inconsistent on the point; K-pop idols posted from about September 27, 2023 and TikTok user @doseofrx posted on September 30.
Is School Photo a 90s yearbook filter?
No. It makes one classic picture-day portrait on a mottled blue backdrop from one current photo, with no decade styling, personas or age change.
Should I use it instead of my child's school photos?
We do not suggest that. It is built for a portrait of your own current face, and an AI image is not an official school record.
