Instagram AI-Generated Profile Label: What It Means, How to Add It and What It Does to Reach

The Instagram AI-generated profile label is an account-level badge for profiles that feature an AI-generated person instead of a human. Instagram announced it on August 31, 2026, as a rename of its earlier "AI creator" label. You turn it on in the app under Edit profile. Instagram says labelled accounts see no change in reach. AI-generated profiles that skip the label can be detected, notified and made ineligible for recommendations, which means people who do not follow you stop being shown your posts. You get back by adding the label or by winning an appeal in Account Status.

If you run an AI influencer, turn it on. That is the whole decision for most accounts. The rest of this guide covers the edge cases: hybrid accounts, removing the label, posts published through the API, and labelling twenty accounts at once.

Oakgen makes an AI influencer studio, so we have a stake in AI personas doing well on Instagram. Nothing below depends on using it.

Build an AI influencer you can label honestly

Create one character, then bring the same face and voice into every image and video by typing @ and their name.

Create your AI influencer

Which Instagram AI label does your account need?

Instagram now has three separate disclosure tools that people mix up. This table is the short version, with each row checked against Instagram's own pages on November 4, 2026.

LabelApplies toWho needs itWhere you set itPenalty for skipping
AI-generated profileThe whole accountAccounts that regularly feature an AI-generated personApp only, Edit profile toggleCan become ineligible for recommendations
AI content (Add AI label)One post, reel or storyRequired for photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio made or altered digitallyToggle when you share, or is_ai_generated in the APIMeta says "there may be penalties"
Paid partnershipOne postSponsored postsToggle when you share, or the API partnership fieldsSeparate branded content rules

An AI influencer usually needs all three at different times. The profile label says who the person is. The post label says a specific reel is synthetic. The paid partnership label says a brand paid for it. Turning on one does not replace the others, with one exception covered below.

Who this guide is for

  • Solo creators running one AI persona who saw the rename and want to know if anything changed for them.
  • Agencies and studios managing several AI accounts for clients, who need one rule that works across every profile.
  • Real creators who use AI heavily and are unsure whether their account counts.
  • Teams that publish through a scheduler or their own API integration and want to know what the API can and cannot label.

If your account was restricted and you are not sure why, read our guide to an AI influencer Instagram account disabled as well. A lost recommendation status and a disabled account are different problems with different fixes.

How we checked this

We read Instagram's creator blog post of August 31, 2026, three Instagram Help Center articles (About AI-generated profiles, Label AI content, and Account Status), and Meta's Instagram Platform changelog and Content Publishing docs, all on November 4, 2026. For Adam Mosseri's comments on AI reach we used Social Media Today's report of his weekly Q&A, because the Q&A was a temporary Instagram Story. TechRepublic's report is used only where it adds a detail, and we say so when we use it.

We did not run accounts through the label or the appeal ourselves. Instagram has not published how much reach an unlabelled account loses or for how long, and nothing here guesses at a number.

What does AI-generated profile mean on Instagram?

The label means the person you see on the account is not real. Instagram's Help Center says the label "means this account regularly posts content featuring an AI-generated person instead of a real human." It describes the account as a whole. A single AI-made post does not make an account an AI-generated profile.

Instagram's announcement gives the reason for the rename. People told Instagram they "don't like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated." The old name, "AI creator", could be read as "a human who creates with AI". The new name says the profile itself features an AI person.

The line Instagram draws is about identity, not tools:

  • Needs the label. A virtual influencer, an AI model account, a faceless brand persona with a generated face, or an account built around an AI character.
  • Does not need it. "Creators who simply use AI tools as part of their creative process don't need to add the label," the announcement says. That covers AI photo edits, AI-written captions, AI graphics and AI b-roll on a real person's account.

The label is shown in four places, per the Help Center: on the profile page, next to the profile in search, next to the account's content in Feed, Reels and Stories, and next to its comments and messages. So once it is on, followers see it almost everywhere the persona appears.

What happened to the old AI creator label?

Instagram began testing the "AI creator" label earlier in 2026. If you had turned it on, Instagram says you "will now see the new name and have a chance to review the AI-generated profile label, confirm if it still fits, or remove it if it no longer applies." You do not need to re-apply. Some older guides, including our own AI influencer disclosure rules by platform, still describe the earlier optional "AI creator" wording, so treat any page that calls it optional with no penalty as out of date.

How to turn on the Instagram AI-generated profile label

The steps below are from Instagram's Help Center, read on November 4, 2026.

  1. Open the Instagram app on Android, iPhone or iPad. The Help Center says "This feature isn't available on computers."
  2. Go to your profile.
  3. Tap Edit profile.
  4. Turn on the toggle next to AI-generated profile.

That is it. There is no form, no review and no wait in Instagram's description. The label then "will begin to appear on their profile and alongside their content if their specific media doesn't already have a label indicating that it was created or edited with AI."

That last clause is the one exception mentioned above. If a reel already carries the AI content label, the profile label does not stack a second badge next to it. It does not mean you can skip post labels. Meta still requires the AI content label on photorealistic video and realistic-sounding audio, which is most AI influencer reels. Our post on whether you have to label AI videos covers that post-level rule across platforms.

What does the label do to reach and recommendations?

For a labelled account, nothing. Instagram's announcement says "Creators who proactively add the AI-generated profile label will not see a change to their profile's reach." The Help Center adds that "Using this label will neither help nor hurt your account's reach."

For an unlabelled AI-generated profile, the risk is recommendations. Instagram says such accounts "may see limits to their account's reach by becoming ineligible to appear in recommendations until they add the profile label." In Instagram's process:

  1. Its systems detect a profile that features an AI-generated person and has no label.
  2. The account is notified.
  3. Account Status shows whether the profile is "no longer eligible to appear in recommendations."
  4. The account gets back by adding the label or by a successful appeal.

Recommendations are how accounts reach people who do not follow them yet. TechRepublic reported that the limits can affect Reels, Explore and in-feed recommendations. For a new AI influencer with few followers, recommendations are likely most of its growth, and the label costs nothing to turn on.

Mosseri's comments in October fit the same picture. In his weekly Q&A, reported by Social Media Today on October 19, 2026, he said "We do not throttle the reach of AI content just for being AI content." He added that ranking tries to show people content they like "whether or not it's AI." Read together with the announcement, the rule is simple. Being AI is not penalised. Hiding it is.

What Instagram has not said

As of November 4, 2026, Instagram has not published how much reach a non-recommendable profile loses, how long the status lasts if you do nothing, or how its detection decides that a person is AI-generated. TechRepublic reported that Meta told CNET detection and notifications would roll out over the weeks after the announcement. Treat any specific number you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.

How to appeal a wrong label or restriction

Instagram admits its detection will make mistakes. The announcement says "Our systems might not always be perfect," and gives two paths back for a profile marked non-recommendable:

  • Add the label, if the account does feature an AI-generated person.
  • Appeal, if it does not. "If their appeal is successful, the profile and its content will be eligible to appear again in recommendations."

To find Account Status in the iPhone app, per the Help Center, go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right, then under More info and support tap Account Status. Professional accounts can also see there whether their profile and content meet the Recommendation Guidelines.

Who is likely to be flagged in error? This is our guess, not something Instagram has said. Real creators with heavy filters, beauty retouching or a very consistent studio look are the obvious cases. If that is you, the appeal is the right path. Adding the label to a real person's account to make the restriction go away would mislead your followers in the opposite direction.

Before you appeal, check two things. First, that nothing on the profile, such as a generated profile photo or a highlight full of AI portraits, makes the account look like it fronts an AI person. Second, that the restriction is the AI-profile one and not a separate Community Standards or Recommendation Guidelines issue, which Account Status lists separately.

Can you remove the Instagram AI-generated profile label?

Yes. It is the same toggle in Edit profile, and Instagram told former AI creator labellers they can "remove it if it no longer applies."

When removing it makes sense:

  • The account was relabelled automatically from AI creator, and it is a real person who only uses AI tools.
  • The account has stopped featuring the AI persona and now shows a real host.

It does not make sense to remove it so the account looks human while the AI persona is still its face. That is the exact case the policy is built to catch, and the result is the non-recommendable status you were trying to avoid. If you are thinking about removing the label because you expect it to cost reach, Instagram's own statement is that it does not.

Hybrid accounts with a real person and an AI persona

Instagram's pages do not address hybrid accounts directly, so this section is our reading of the wording, not Instagram's ruling.

The Help Center test is whether the account "regularly posts content featuring an AI-generated person instead of a real human." Apply it to the common setups:

SetupOur readingWhy
Real creator, AI edits and AI b-rollNo profile labelUsing AI tools only, which Instagram excludes
Real creator, occasional AI-generated version of themselvesNo profile label, label each such postThe account features a real human. The post label covers the synthetic clips
Real creator and an AI co-host who appears in most postsProfile label onThe account regularly features an AI-generated person
AI persona with a human voice actorProfile label onThe person viewers see is AI-generated
Brand account with a generated mascot faceProfile label on if the face looks like a realistic personThe label exists for profiles that seem human

When you are unsure, the cost of labelling is low and the cost of not labelling can be lost recommendations. A line in the bio such as "AI persona, created by [your name]" also helps followers who never notice small badges.

Labelling scheduled posts through the API

If you publish through a scheduler or your own integration, there is now a way to apply the post-level AI label at publish time. Meta's Instagram Platform changelog entry of June 22, 2026 says the Content Publishing API "now supports self-disclosure of AI-generated content at publish time." You set is_ai_generated to true when you create the media container with POST /ig_user_id/media. You can read it back with GET /ig_media_id?fields=is_ai_generated.

Details from Meta's docs, read November 4, 2026:

  • It works in both Instagram API with Facebook Login and Instagram API with Instagram Login.
  • For carousels, set it on the carousel container only. Setting it on carousel children "will result in an error."
  • The parameter applies the AI info label to that post. It does not set the profile label.

We found no API field for the AI-generated profile label in the changelog or the Content Publishing docs. So the profile label is a one-time manual step in the app for each account, and the API handles the per-post label after that. If your scheduler does not expose an AI label option, ask the vendor whether it passes is_ai_generated. If it cannot, label those posts in the app or publish them from the app.

Rolling the label out across many accounts

For an agency, the risk is not one account. It is the one client account in twenty that nobody checked. This is the checklist we would use. It needs no tools beyond the Instagram app.

AI-generated profile rollout checklist

  1. List every account you manage, with owner, login holder and whether it features an AI person, a real person or both. Use the hybrid table above to decide.
  2. Turn the label on from a phone for each account that features an AI person. Desktop will not work.
  3. Review any account that had the old AI creator label. Confirm it still fits or remove it.
  4. Screenshot Edit profile with the toggle on and file it with the date. That is your record if a client asks.
  5. Check Account Status on every account the same day and note any recommendation limits that existed before you started.
  6. Set post labels in your publishing flow. Turn on Add AI label in the app, or pass is_ai_generated through the API, for every photorealistic AI video and realistic AI audio post.
  7. Keep paid partnership labels separate. A sponsored post by an AI persona still needs the paid partnership label. Our guide to AI influencer brand deals covers what brands expect.
  8. Write the label into new-account onboarding so it is on before the first post, not after the first notification.
  9. Recheck Account Status monthly, and after any notification. Appeal anything that looks wrong within the same week while the facts are fresh.

Make every client persona from one character

Agencies can keep one face and voice per AI influencer and reuse it across images, videos and talking clips.

Common mistakes with the AI-generated profile label

  • Treating the profile label as the only label. It does not replace the post-level AI content label that Meta requires on photorealistic AI video and realistic AI audio.
  • Trying to set it on desktop. The Help Center says the feature is not available on computers.
  • Removing it to look more human. That is the case Instagram's detection targets.
  • Labelling a real creator to make a restriction go away. Appeal instead. A wrong label misleads followers too.
  • Assuming a scheduler labels posts. Only integrations that pass is_ai_generated do, and none of them set the profile label.
  • Reading old guides. Anything that calls the label "AI creator" and optional predates August 31, 2026.
  • Hiding the persona in the bio. A clear bio line costs nothing and answers the question before followers ask.

Where Oakgen fits, and where it does not

Oakgen does not set Instagram labels. No content tool can set the profile label, because it lives in Instagram's own Edit profile screen. What Oakgen does is the part before posting. In the AI Influencers studio you create a character once, then bring the same face and voice into any image, video or voiceover by typing @ and their name. If you are starting from scratch, our walkthrough on how to create an AI influencer covers the brief, the reference set and the voice step by step.

Other tools fit better in some cases:

  • For publishing with the API label set, use a scheduler or integration that passes is_ai_generated. That is publishing software, not a generator.
  • For a real creator making a one-off AI version of themselves, a single tool such as a talking photo generator or voice cloning with consent may be all you need. A full character library is more than that job requires.
  • For a dedicated avatar product with built-in presenter templates, standalone avatar tools may be quicker for talking-head ads. If ads are the main job, compare them with our AI UGC ad generator.

Before you post a new persona, run the AI influencer consistency drift test so the face followers see under the label stays the same person.

Start an AI influencer the right way

Create the character, make the first posts, then turn on Instagram's AI-generated profile label before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

Does the AI-generated profile label lower my reach?

Instagram says no. Its creator blog of August 31, 2026 says creators who add the label themselves will not see a change to their profile's reach, and the Help Center says the label will neither help nor hurt reach. The penalty is for AI-generated profiles that skip the label. Those can become ineligible for recommendations.

How do I turn on the AI-generated profile label?

In the Instagram app, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then turn on the toggle next to AI-generated profile. Instagram's Help Center says the feature is not available on computers, so use the Android, iPhone or iPad app.

Can I remove the AI-generated profile label from my Instagram account?

Yes. It is a toggle in Edit profile, and Instagram told creators who had the old AI creator label that they can remove it if it no longer applies. Only remove it if the account no longer features an AI-generated person. If Instagram's systems still detect one, the profile can lose recommendation eligibility.

What if Instagram wrongly flags my account as an AI-generated profile?

Check Account Status in the app. Instagram says flagged profiles get a notification, can see there whether they are no longer eligible for recommendations, and can appeal restrictions they believe were made in error. A successful appeal makes the profile and its content eligible for recommendations again.

Can I set the AI-generated profile label through the Instagram API?

Not that we could find in Meta's documentation on November 4, 2026. The Content Publishing API has an is_ai_generated parameter, added June 22, 2026, but it applies the AI label to a single post. The profile label is a toggle in the app.

Do I need the label if I only use AI to edit my photos or write captions?

No. Instagram's announcement says creators who simply use AI tools as part of their creative process do not need to add the label. It is for profiles that feature an AI-generated person.
