Grok Imagine Image 2 and GPT Image 2 compete for the same serious jobs: posters with readable text, product creative, local edits, multi-reference composition, and images that need more than one revision. On xAI's August 7, 2026 Arena snapshot, GPT Image 2 ranked first and Grok Image 2 ranked second for both text-to-image and editing.
That makes GPT Image 2 the safer evidence-backed default today. Grok Image 2 is the more interesting choice when you want xAI's consumer editing surface, five-reference workflow, templates, or smart resize inside Grok.

Quick verdict
| Need | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Best current Arena signal | GPT Image 2 | It led xAI's Aug 7 generation and editing charts |
| Consumer local-edit interface | Grok Image 2 | Magic wand, segmentation, and background removal |
| Five consumer references | Grok Image 2 | xAI states up to five in Image 2.0 |
| Documented exact API model | GPT Image 2 | Image 2.0's exact API identity is not yet published |
| Smart ratio expansion | Grok Image 2 | Nine announced resize presets |
| One-workspace comparison | Oakgen | Run the same brief across available models |
What the launch benchmark says
xAI's Image Edit Arena chart reported GPT Image 2 at 1463 and grok-imagine-image-2 (low) at 1439. Its Text-to-Image Arena chart showed GPT Image 2 at 1380 and Grok at 1320. Both are snapshots from August 7, not fixed ratings.
The signal is still useful: Grok entered near the top, but xAI's own evidence did not place it above GPT Image 2. Any article calling Grok the outright winner needs separate same-prompt testing.
Generation and prompt following
xAI says Image 2.0 follows detailed instructions and plans multi-part layouts before rendering. OpenAI positions GPT Image 2 for high-fidelity generation and editing through its image API. For a fair trial, use a neutral prompt with an exact object count, two spatial relationships, and fixed text.
Avoid judging from one attractive portrait. The harder prompt is the useful one.
Typography and information design
Grok's launch gallery includes a typography-history chart, an Odyssey map, a travel itinerary, and a pixel-art spacecraft infographic. Those examples support xAI's claim that layout is central to this release, but they remain curated samples.

GPT Image 2 held the stronger blind-preference score at launch. I would start with GPT for a dense client deliverable, then run Grok against the same copy. Proofread both.
Editing
Grok's consumer controls are easier to describe as a workflow: select with the wand or segmentation, remove a background, combine references, then resize the approved result. GPT Image 2's strength is a documented generation/editing API plus its first-place edit score in the xAI chart.
Pick Grok for the announced consumer tooling. Pick GPT when programmatic access and the current leaderboard signal carry more weight. The Grok editing guide covers the selection workflow.
API and price
GPT Image 2 has an official developer model page. xAI's existing API offers standard and quality Grok Imagine models, but the Image 2.0 launch says its API access is coming soon. That naming gap prevents an honest one-row price comparison for the exact new release.
Existing xAI prices are $0.02 per standard output and $0.05 at 1K or $0.07 at 2K for the quality model, plus image-input fees. Those figures belong to documented current API models, not a confirmed grok-imagine-image-2 ID.

A five-prompt comparison suite
- A poster with one headline, six labels, and a fixed grid.
- A product image edited through three small changes.
- A three-reference composite with assigned roles.
- A 1:1 master expanded to 9:16 and 2:1.
- A four-frame character sheet with one face and outfit.
Run each prompt once at comparable quality, don't cherry-pick, and log failures. Oakgen Image Arena handles the same-prompt generation step for models available in the workspace.
Who should choose Grok Image 2?
Choose it if you work inside Grok and care about local editing, templates, five-reference composition, or smart resize. It also deserves a trial for posters and infographics because that is where xAI aimed the release.
Who should choose GPT Image 2?
Choose it if you want the stronger launch-day Arena signal, a documented API path, or a conservative first pick for dense production tasks. Oakgen users can open the GPT Image 2 model page and compare the result with Grok Imagine.
Common mistakes
- Calling selected vendor gallery images a blind test.
- Mixing consumer and API capabilities in one spec row.
- Comparing different prompts or quality settings.
- Picking a winner from one visual style.
- Ignoring edit drift after the first generation.
Frequently asked questions
