Magnific AI in 2026: The Freepik Rebrand, Pricing, and What Changed

Magnific AI now means two things. It is still the creative upscaler that made the name famous, and since April 28, 2026 it is also the new brand for all of Freepik: stock assets plus an AI suite for image, video, audio, 3D and design, sold on credit-based plans. The regular US starting price is $14.50 a month for Premium billed annually (US pricing page archived September 20, 2026). On September 26, 2026 the live page was running 50% off Premium annual until September 28, which halves that price for new annual buyers while it lasts. The upscaler itself works the way it always has.

That is why a search for "Freepik pricing" now lands on magnific.com.

Disclosure: Oakgen is our product. We include it because it is relevant to this workflow, but the comparison also covers where standalone tools may be better.

Research note

Everything here was checked on September 26, 2026. We used Magnific's rebrand announcement (via an April 28 archive copy), the live magnific.com pricing page, archived copies of its US pricing page and plan guide from September 2026, and Magnific's upscaler and API documentation. Magnific's help pages block automated requests, so some details come from archived copies dated in the Sources section. We did not buy a plan or run an output benchmark.

What changed: the Freepik to Magnific rebrand

The announcement, dated April 28, 2026, opens with one line: "Today, Freepik becomes Magnific."

Some context from the same post. Freepik started in 2010 as a search engine for graphic resources and grew into a library of more than 250 million stock assets. At the rebrand it reported 1 million paid subscribers, 100 million monthly visits, $230 million in annual recurring revenue and more than 290 enterprise teams, naming customers including Guess, BBC, R/GA and Damm. It also noted that a16z ranked Freepik 11th among generative AI web companies, and that the company was founded in Málaga without venture capital.

What that means in practice:

  • The domain and name changed. The pricing page title now reads "Pricing plans | Magnific (formerly Freepik)".
  • The company did not. The footer still says Freepik Company S.L., with sibling projects Flaticon, Slidesgo, Wepik and Videvo.
  • The original upscaler still exists. The site navigation carries a banner: "Looking for magnific.ai? Go to the legacy service."
  • The name "Magnific" now covers far more than upscaling, which is why so many older comparison posts are out of date.

Magnific now: the full suite

The magnific.com menu on September 26, 2026 listed these tool groups:

GroupTools listed
ImageGenerator, editor, upscaler, extender, variations, cinematic shot, background remover, skin enhancer, relight, change camera
VideoGenerator, project editor, clip editor, upscaler, speak, relight
AudioText to speech, sound effect generator, music generator
Other3D tools, design tools, Spaces (shared canvas), MCP, agents, plugins, desktop and mobile apps

Most generation runs on third-party models (the pricing page lists Nano Banana 2, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Kling 3.0 Pro, ElevenLabs Music and others) billed in Magnific credits. The upscalers are where Magnific's own technology is the draw.

Magnific pricing: current plans and credits

The price you see depends on region and on running promotions, so we recorded it on two dates.

US pricing, archived September 11, 2026 (individual plans, annual billing, "Save 25% with annual"):

Live page, September 26, 2026: a limited-time offer of 50% off Premium annual, "Offer ends September 28". We saw prices in Indian rupees from our location, so we are not quoting a converted USD figure. The page says prices exclude VAT and offers a 30-day refund guarantee.

What the plan guide (archived September 9, 2026) adds:

  • Monthly equivalents: Premium 20,000 credits, Premium+ 45,000, Pro 112,500 or 300,000.
  • Free tier: up to 20 AI images a day with the in-house model and 10 stock downloads a day, personal use, attribution required.
  • Premium+ "unlimited" covers image generation on most models. Video, audio and editing tools still use credits.
  • Annual plans receive all credits upfront, valid for a year. Unused monthly credits do not roll over month to month.
  • Business: 2 to 100 seats, 45,000 credits per seat per month. Enterprise: custom, with SSO, and it lists GDPR, ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type I.
  • No free trials of paid plans.

What the credits buy

Sample prices from the live pricing page on September 26, 2026:

JobMagnific credits
Magnific Precision upscale90 per 2K image
Nano Banana 2 image (2K)75 per image
Sound effect15 per 3 seconds
Lyria 3 song160 per song
ElevenLabs Music600 per 30 seconds
Kling 3.0 Pro video450 per 5 seconds

On Premium, 240,000 yearly credits work out to roughly 2,666 Precision upscales if you spent nothing else. That is plenty for upscaling alone. Heavy video users burn through credits much faster, which matches the pattern we covered in our Higgsfield pricing breakdown and Krea compute unit guide: the plan card number means little until you price the jobs you actually run.

How the Magnific upscaler works: Creative vs Precision

Magnific offers two modes. Most disappointed users picked the wrong one.

Creative mode

Creative mode reconstructs the image and invents new detail. Magnific's app documentation lists two engines: "Magnific" with full slider control, and "Classic" with presets (Subtle, Vivid, Wild, Custom). You can add a prompt, choose what the image is "optimized for" (portraits, illustration, game assets, nature, 3D renders and other categories), and scale 2x or 4x in the app. The API also documents 8x and 16x, with a maximum output of about 25.3 million pixels.

The three sliders that matter, each from -10 to +10 (default 0 in the API):

SliderWhat it doesPush it up whenPull it down when
CreativityHow much new detail the model inventsLow-res AI art, renders, concept sketchesFaces you need to keep, logos, text
HDRDefinition and micro-contrastFlat images that need punchOutput looks crunchy or over-processed
ResemblanceHow closely the result sticks to the sourceCreativity is drifting from the originalYou want a looser reinterpretation

A sensible starting point for AI art is creativity slightly above zero, HDR at zero, resemblance slightly above zero. Then change one slider at a time. High creativity with low resemblance is where the famous "Magnific look" comes from, and also where extra fingers, changed faces and garbled text appear.

Precision mode

Precision is the faithful option. The API docs describe it as producing no hallucinations and recommend it for logos, UI, text and product photos. The app guide lists Magnific v2 (sublime, photo, photo denoiser) and v1 models, presets such as Balanced, Portraits and Grainy Analog, sharpness and grain controls from 0 to 100, and scaling up to 16x.

The video upscaler follows the same split. Its guide says Precision "enhances only what is already present", outputs up to Ultra HD 4K, and behaves identically on Magnific and Magnific.ai.

For a broader look at how these approaches compare, see our explainer on AI image upscaling to 4K.

Who Magnific is best for

  • AI artists and illustrators who want small generations turned into rich, detailed finals. This is the core use case.
  • 3D and game artists upscaling renders and assets, where invented texture is welcome.
  • Designers already paying for Freepik stock. The same plan now bundles AI tools and upscaling.
  • Teams who want a faithful upscaler and a creative one under one roof, switching between Precision and Creative by job.

It is a weaker fit for people who only need occasional faithful enlargement of product photos. Our guide to upscalers for product photography covers tools built for that.

Where Magnific wins

  • Creative upscaling is its home turf. The slider set (creativity, HDR, resemblance, plus fractality and engine choice in the API) gives more control over invented detail than most hosted upscalers.
  • Scale ceiling. Up to 16x in documented modes, with a 25.3-megapixel output limit on the Creative API.
  • Both modes in one place. Precision for labels and faces, Creative for art, with a video upscaler that follows the same logic.
  • Stock plus AI in one plan. If you use the 250 million-asset library, that bundle is hard to replicate.
  • A real API with per-image pricing by output size, useful for automated pipelines.

If one of those is why you are shopping, choose Magnific. If none of them apply, our Magnific AI alternatives roundup compares seven other routes side by side.

Where Oakgen fits

Oakgen does not run Magnific's engine. It offers different upscalers, with credits calculated from the provider's list cost with no platform markup (260 credits per US dollar), next to image, video, voice and music generation on one balance. As of September 2026:

Oakgen toolModel and controlsCredit cost
Image upscalerTopaz, 1x to 4x, eight modes including High Fidelity, Low Resolution, Text Refine and Recovery, optional face enhancement21 credits at 1x or 2x, 42 at 3x, 84 at 4x
Image upscalerCrystal, 1x to 6x, creativity 0 to 1026 credits at 2x, 104 at 4x (a flat estimate per scale factor, not a per-megapixel charge)
Image upscalerClarity, 1x to 4x, prompt, creativity and resemblance slidersPriced per megapixel, varies with image size
Video upscalerTarget 720p, 1080p, 2K or 4K, uploads up to 500MB71 credits per job, flat

Clarity is the closest thing to Magnific's creative workflow on Oakgen: a prompt plus creativity and resemblance controls. Topaz is the faithful option for product shots and faces.

Limitations

Oakgen tops out at 4x on Topaz and Clarity and 6x on Crystal, so it will not match Magnific's documented 16x. It has no HDR or fractality sliders, and the video upscaler exposes a single model rather than separate Creative and Precision modes. If extreme scale or Magnific's specific creative look is the requirement, Magnific is the better tool.

Where Oakgen makes sense is the rest of the job. If you upscale an image, then animate it with the AI video generator, add a voiceover and a music bed, all of that draws from one credit balance, with plans from $9 a month for 2,000 credits.

Upscale, Animate and Score From One Balance

Plans start at $9 a month for 2,000 credits across upscaling, image, video, voice and music.
